Yad Vashem
"And to them will I give in my house and within my walls
a memorial (Yad Vashem) ... that shall not be cut off
"
(Isaiah, 56:5).
This verse, which appears on the outside wall of this museum, is the source of the name Yad Vashem. The Holocaust memorial of the Jewish people. Located on Har Hazikaron (the Mount of Remembrance) in Jerusalem, Israel, it was established in 1953 by an act of the Israeli Knesset.

The Holocaust (in Hebrew Shoah) spanned the years 1933 to 1945, the time that Germany was under Nazi rule and the Nazi regime occupied large portions of the European continent. Nazi Germany was guided by racist -antisemitic principles. Germans were deemed members of the superior "Aryan" race that was destined to rule the world; in contrast, the Jews were regarded as the "destructive race."
Ultimately this lethal ideology led to the policy of systematic mass murder of Jews that became known as" the Final Solution of the Jewish problem."
These events are of immense significance for the contemporary world. By directing visitors to confront this history, we hope to stimulate them to grapple with issues that strike at our basic nature as human beings and to gain insights about our societies and ourselves.

Croatia's Foreign Minister
Deep sorrow for the suffering of the Jewish people in Croatia during the Ustashe regime of WW2
On Tuesday, May 12, 1998, during his official 4-day visit to Israel Croatia's Foreign Minister Mate Granic paid a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre in Jerusalem where he laid a wreath on behalf of the Croatian government. He then gave a statement in which he expressed his deepest respect for the victims of the Holocaust and his deep sorrow for the suffering of the Jewish people in Croatia during the Ustashe regime of World War 2, stressing however that the modern and democratic Croatian state condemned fascism, racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.

Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally Saturday night, November 4, 1995, in Tel Aviv's Kings Square. Rabin was walking to his car after the rally when he was shot. The 73-year-old prime minister later died in surgery at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.Arafat PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat said he was "very sad and very shocked for this awful and terrible crime." "He is one of the brave leaders of Israel and the peacemakers," Arafat said. "I hope that we will have the ability, the Israelis and Palestinians, to overcome this tragedy. I offer my condolences to his wife, his family, the Israeli government and the Israeli people." Police arrested Yigal Amir (376K QuickTime movie) identified as the gunman, a law student at Bar Ilan University, a resident of the central town of Herzeliya, who had connections to the far-right group Eyal and had been involved in right-wing causes.

Subject: I Was Impressed By Your Site!

Shalom!
I was quite impressed by my visit today to Mario's Cyberspace Station: Israel. What an excellent job you have done.
I would like to invite you to visit a new site, which deals with promoting the Israel that we love and cherish - from its better side: Israeli Culture.
Israeli Culture is a starting point for web surfers, as it has links and reviews of sites - all connected with Israeli Music, Art, Film and Theater. And there's more. Each week there is a feature story, highlighting a different aspect of Israeli Culture. This week's feature is entitled: Does Masorti Judaism Have a Chance in Israel? Conservative Jews constitute a large percentage of the Jews living outside Israel, yet in the Jewish State they are a minority without rights.
Previous features have dealt with: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Chief Rabbi of Israel - The Jerusalem Film Festival - Kibbutz Life in Israel - Shopping in the "Shuk" - The Arad Music Festival ... Israeli Culture is unique - in that the site is totally "refreshed" each week. New sites, new links and a new feature article. But you will never miss out - for the site has a growing resource library, and an index of previous features. In addition, there is a section called Dateline Israel - which is a weekly review of happenings and events in Israel.
What am I talking about? Visit Israeli Culture and find out! You will quickly see that this is the best way to promote Israel's better side - Israeli culture. I would be glad to receive and answer any questions, comments or suggestions you may have.
Sincerely,
Ellis

Shema Yisrael Torah Network
Shema Yisrael Torah Network
Haredi Jews, having largely cut themselves off from the big world by voluntarily abstaining from the use of TV, have instead gone at computers and the Internet with a vengeance. In effect, observant Jews around the world have established a kind of minyan in cyberspace.

They don't use this international Jewish connection to pray together, but they do almost everything else using modem-equipped personal computers: studying Talmud and the weekly Torah portion together; asking rabbis halachic questions; collecting information on Orthodox synagogues, schools and ritual baths around the world; reading rabbis' inspirational and halachic lectures; and going shopping in Torah-connected electronic malls. All of it is kosher, and if they wish, they can lock themselves out of the "treif" Internet beyond, keeping carefully within the bounds of approved Net sites.

Perhaps the most significant Internet addresses for the haredi community, as well as for many modern Orthodox Jews, is the Shema Yisrael Torah Network. It was founded a year ago by an ambitious young man named Adam Tannenbaum, who moved here from Los Angeles in the Eighties.

This impressive Web site, located at http://www.shemayisrael.co.il , is constantly updated. During a 50-day period recently, the site was accessed over 100,000 times, 16% of users in Israel, about half in the US (the site is mostly in English), with the rest throughout the Diaspora. Anyone can access it, but one can also voluntarily join a restricted Intranet arrangement that prevents users from going into "forbidden" sites.
